Just before his death on April 21, Pope Francis briefly met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Vatican. Though their meeting was short, Vance shared warm words and gifts were exchanged. However, the visit stirred controversy.
The day before their meeting, Vance and his family toured the Vatican, including the Sistine Chapel. A photo of Vance holding his son under Michelangelo’s famous ceiling sparked backlash online, as photography is strictly forbidden in the chapel. Critics accused him of showing disrespect, though some defended him, claiming the Vatican had given special permission, as it has for other state visits.
Adding to the scrutiny, reports say the Pope may have initially declined to meet Vance, instead sending high-ranking church officials. Despite the controversy, Vance expressed deep respect for Pope Francis and mourned his passing, calling him a powerful spiritual leader.
