Don’t Swim Here: Most Treacherous American Beaches And Their Hidden Dangers
Researchers at Tideschart, a leading tide-forecasting site, have warned tourists to avoid these 10 dangerous U.S. beaches this summer. Hazards like hurricanes, shark attacks, and surf-related deaths make these spots risky — especially in Florida, which dominates the list.
New Smyrna Beach tops the list with a danger score of 76.92. Known as the “Shark Bite Capital of the World,” it has frequent storms and 12 reported surf fatalities since 2010.
Laguna Beach, Florida, ranks second (67.75) with 39 surf deaths and nine shark attacks. Daytona Beach comes third (64.47) with around 70 shark attacks and 27 surf fatalities.
Other beaches on the list include Miami Beach, Indialantic Boardwalk, Cocoa Beach, Palm Beach, Miramar Heights, Cape Canaveral, and Jupiter Beach Park — all in Florida.
In contrast, Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York, was praised by Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) for its beauty, white quartz sand, and scenic dunes — naming it one of America’s best beaches.
