Warning signs you should never ignore on your skin

Understanding Psoriasis: More Than Just a Skin Condition

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that speeds up skin cell growth, causing itchy, scaly patches, redness, and inflammation. It affects over 125 million people worldwide and can impact sleep, concentration, and overall health.

There are five main types of psoriasis:

  1. Plaque Psoriasis: The most common type, with dry, raised, scaly patches often on elbows, knees, and scalp.
  2. Guttate Psoriasis: Small, drop-shaped spots usually triggered by infections, common in children and young adults.
  3. Inverse Psoriasis: Smooth, shiny red patches in skin folds like under breasts and groin, worsened by friction and sweat.
  4. Pustular Psoriasis: White pus-filled blisters surrounded by red skin, sometimes with fever—requires urgent medical care.
  5. Erythrodermic Psoriasis: A rare, severe form causing widespread redness, peeling, and pain—needs immediate medical attention.

Psoriasis can also affect nails, causing thickening, pitting, or discoloration, sometimes signaling psoriatic arthritis.

If you notice any symptoms, see a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Managing psoriasis well can improve your quality of life.
